Spinning Workshops with Kim McKenna

This workshop is led by Kim McKenna, an experienced spinner and dyer from our very own Greater Vancouver area.

Sanjo Silk is pleased to announce the spinning content for their 2019 workshop line-up. In the coming year Sanjo Silk will host two 1-day silk spinning workshops. The workshops will be led by Kim McKenna, an experienced spinner and dyer from our very own Greater Vancouver area.

Our April 28th workshop explores mulberry silk and the host of spinning preparations available to hand spinners. Over the course of the day you will have the pleasure of working with Mawata silk, spun silk, silk sliver, silk noil and a few of Kim’s favourite mulberry silk blends available from our Studio.

While you spin the exquisite silk fibres carried in our Studio, Kim will:

• Refine your spinning technique.

• Show you how to adjust your wheel for silk spinning.

• Prepare silk cocoons for reeling; so the class can experience first hand this mesmerizing first step in the silk production process.

• Help you to explore different drafting techniques.

• Teach you her plying and silk yarn finishing techniques.

• Explain the life cycle and anatomy of the marvelous creatures that create the fibre you will be working with.

Class: Classes are limited to 6 students. An equipment list, which includes a spinning wheel, will be emailed to students 1 month prior to the workshop.

Fees: The workshop fee includes 150g of silk fibres, a full set of comprehensive notes and a binder for your notes and samples.

Registration: The registration fee for a single workshop is $120 and $215 if you wish to register for both workshops. A refund will be issued separately if you register for both.

Skill Level: This workshop is suitable for all skill levels so long as the student can confidently spin a continuous yarn. Wheels must be in good working order. Please refer to www.claddaghfibrearts.com for instructions on spinning wheel maintenance, which can be found under the Downloads tab.
