Things are looking up for a harbour seal pup that was rescued near Nanaimo earlier this week. She had fishing netting cutting deeply into her neck. The female pup, estimated at five to six months old, was first sighted last week in Lantzville and then again on Wednesday. She was rescued with the help of wildlife rescue helicopter pilot Norm Snihur andHarbour Air Seaplanes, which transported her to Vancouver. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre. Maëlle, as the pup is called following the 2015 naming theme of athletes at the Rescue Centre, is alert and feeding well. She is likely the last Rescue Centre patient of 2015. This year, the Rescue Centre treated 144 seal pups, one sea otter and disentangled several sea lions in the wild.
